Jesus came into the world to save the world – To give unconditional love. The Old Testament was about teaching the Jews laws. The first half is about obeying and loving God, and not taking his name in vain or having other gods before him – keeping a day holy to be with God. The second half is about loving your neighbor: No lying, cheating or stealing (taking a man’s wife). Adultery meant “do not take another man’s property”. Some wonder if this still holds true as women are no longer considered property.
So where does all this talk of God being against gays come from? Most cite Leviticus on the holiness code. There are two verses that a man shall not lay with another man. A majority of these code verses were to keep the Jews separate from the people who’s land they were held slaves in. There are a whole bunch of “Codes” that we no longer keep in our society – we no longer condemn the following from Leviticus and Deuteronomy:
- A couple found to have had intercourse during a woman’s period – executed
- Bride not a virgin: stoned – with boulders, not pot
- Adulterers stoned
- Masturbation condemmed
- Children who strike their parents, executed.
- Strict prohibitions against interracial marriage, birth control, discussing or even naming a sexual organ – and seeing one’s parents nekked.
- People were prohibited from having round haircuts, tattoos, or the wearing of mixed fabric garments
Both Jesus and Paul said that Leviticus’ holiness code does not pertain to Christians. In the New, Jesus and God allowed the Jews to eat previously unclean things like pork and shellfish. When asked, Jesus stated the first commandment was the most important. “Love the Lord your God.”
Matthew 22:37-40 (KJV) Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
The next place that people cite is Sodom and Gomorra being destroyed by God because they were gay. Actually only one verse talked about any homesexual act and it was gang rape. A crime of power and hate. It says in Ezekiel 16:48-49: “This is the sin of Sodom; she and her suburbs had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not help or encourage the poor and needy. They were arrogant and this was abominable in God’s eyes.” What does that say about the Republicans (Christian Right?) who wish to help the rich to make more money and stop helping the poor with government “handouts”?
So. Shall we hate the gays? Jesus says no. Shall we condem them? Jesus says judge not lest thee be judged. He also said let you who has no sin cast the first stone. This means, are you perfect? Jesus wants us to love all – even gay people.
It was once the law that blacks should be separate from whites. Even christians have changed their philosophies on how they perceive the bible. Jerry Falwell believed the bible supported segregation until a black shoe shiner asked him when he could enter his church. He changed his stance and dumped his belief in separation.
Finally: Are you perfect? Do you keep the sabbath – Do you say “Oh my God”? Have you given your life to God and follow all of Jesus’s teachings. Have you given all your wealth to God and followed Jesus in to the dessert?
A future post may be about Gay Marriage. Before you read it, consider is marriage something from the Church? Should the Church be against gays. Should gay people be allowed civil unions and afforded all rights under law that heterosexual couples have?
