Leviticus, Homosexuals and The Holiness Code

Jesus came into the world to save the world – To give unconditional love. The Old Testament was about teaching the Jews laws. The first half is about obeying and loving God, and not taking his name in vain or having other gods before him – keeping a day holy to be with God. The second half is about loving your neighbor: No lying, cheating or stealing (taking a man’s wife). Adultery meant “do not take another man’s property”. Some wonder if this still holds true as women are no longer considered property.

So where does all this talk of God being against gays come from? Most cite Leviticus on the holiness code. There are two verses that a man shall not lay with another man. A majority of these code verses were to keep the Jews separate from the people who’s land they were held slaves in. There are a whole bunch of “Codes” that we no longer keep in our society – we no longer condemn the following from Leviticus and Deuteronomy:

  • A couple found to have had intercourse during a woman’s period – executed
  • Bride not a virgin: stoned – with boulders, not pot
  • Adulterers stoned
  • Masturbation condemmed
  • Children who strike their parents, executed.
  • Strict prohibitions against interracial marriage, birth control, discussing or even naming a sexual organ – and seeing one’s parents nekked.
  • People were prohibited from having round haircuts, tattoos, or the wearing of mixed fabric garments

Both Jesus and Paul said that Leviticus’ holiness code does not pertain to Christians. In the New, Jesus and God allowed the Jews to eat previously unclean things like pork and shellfish. When asked, Jesus stated the first commandment was the most important. “Love the Lord your God.”

Matthew 22:37-40 (KJV)  Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mindThis is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

The next place that people cite is Sodom and Gomorra being destroyed by God because they were gay. Actually only one verse talked about any homesexual act and it was gang rape. A crime of power and hate. It says in Ezekiel 16:48-49: “This is the sin of Sodom; she and her suburbs had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not help or encourage the poor and needy. They were arrogant and this was abominable in God’s eyes.” What does that say about the Republicans (Christian Right?) who wish to help the rich to make more money and stop helping the poor with government “handouts”?

So. Shall we hate the gays? Jesus says no. Shall we condem them? Jesus says judge not lest thee be judged. He also said let you who has no sin cast the first stone. This means, are you perfect? Jesus wants us to love all – even gay people.

It was once the law that blacks should be separate from whites. Even christians have changed their philosophies on how they perceive the bible. Jerry Falwell believed the bible supported segregation until a black shoe shiner asked him when he could enter his church. He changed his stance and dumped his belief in separation.

Finally: Are you perfect? Do you keep the sabbath – Do you say “Oh my God”? Have you given your life to God and follow all of Jesus’s teachings. Have you given all your wealth to God and followed Jesus in to the dessert?

A future post may be about Gay Marriage. Before you read it, consider is marriage something from the Church? Should the Church be against gays. Should gay people be allowed civil unions and afforded all rights under law that heterosexual couples have?

Friday Tip

Go the extra mile.

If you’re hired to design something, make it the best you’ve ever done. If you’re hired to dig a hole, make it right the first time. If you’re hired to research something – spend an extra hour and write the best summary you ever have.

You may be recognized for this. It will make your life better even if you’re not.

I’ve blogged a couple times, once here and once on this blog. Are you stuck on your score, measured engagement or “Clout”? I believe that engageemnt is best measured in actual conversation, not how many times you were retweeted or “liked”.

Check out the blog link above and comment either place.

What types of things do you do to keep cool in the Summer?

Water Fight

Yesterday my son’s friends and their parents came over for a grill out/adult beverages (for the adults, silly), and a water fight. Lucky it was 90˚F in WMI yesterday. It was really fun for the kids, with water balloon wars, squirt gun fights, water wand (soaker) shooting and me trying to keep all the refilling stations … well, filled with water. I’m pretty sure all the water really helped the lawn too.

There were grand parents, close to a dozen kids, and one dog, who thought it funny to play with the local black and white “kitty” the night before. Yay. I really needed to use the rest of my skunk recipe just before a party.

We threw up a canopy to add to the already shady back yard, but most all the kids found sun to hang out instead. Consequently the boy child got sun or heat stroke last night. I spent the night trying to keep Tylenol down him and ingesting water. Finally around 3:55am he floated off to sleep. And so did I. I can’t say this vehemently enough: DRINK FLUIDS – and not ones with diarrhetics, like alcohol or caffeine in them when it’s hot and or sunny.

So – Do you have a pool, lake or other fun way of keeping cool this Summer? And are you drinking enough water?

Really – REALLY looking forward to this weekend

Soccer GamesThree soccer games this weekend. The Boys U10 have a double-header against 2 teams that we either lost or tied. We’re much better than the beginning of the season. The boys are 2-2-1. I’d just be happy with one win. They’re having fun and playing very well. That’s all I really want.

Gonna be a hot weekend, here in WMI, though. I’m taking a canvas tenty-type cover for shade. Don’t need them getting all dehydrated in the 90˚ temps.

The Girls U12 is going up against a team we lost to last week. My girls didn’t show up to play last weekend. Hopefully they do tomorrow. We could’ve beat them if we’d wanted to win. The girls are at 2-3-1 – we need this win to end at 50-50. There was only one game that we weren’t in and had no hope of winning or tying. A team from Rockford MI. We should win this last game – they just have to want it. And they have to enjoy it. Unfortunately if they’re not having fun, they’re not winning.

Wish me/us luck. Any words of advice on how to motivate 11-12yr old girls: I’m all ears. *Puberty!*

Next up is my son’s birthday party. Lots of work to get the yard ready for that one. I’m taking this afternoon off to mow. I have 1.5 days to get ready.

More luck needed.
